Bespoke INSET Sessions for your School or Cluster

Vivien Townsend Consulting can provide bespoke INSET for your school or cluster. Vivien prides herself on having worked with many schools and clusters of schools in this way and believes that CPD should always reflect your needs taking into account your locality, setting, curriculum, staff and children. Our evaluation process is designed to support you in anticipating and assessing the impact of CPD, and to establish next steps for your staff.

Our support is competitively priced with different rates for twilights, half days and full days of INSET, and we offer discounts for multiple bookings. These charges cover delivery and planning time, schools will be sent course materials to reproduce in advance of the session and travel is charged at £0.45 per mile from LE12 6PF. To find out more about what we charge, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Although every session is bespoke, there are similarities in what schools and clusters ask for and some of the most popular topics are listed below as a starting point. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

Active Maths

In this session we can look at lots of different activities for teaching maths away from a desk. Ideas can be linked to strands from the PNS Renewed Framework and we can use your PE equipment and outdoor space to ensure staff have no excuses to try something out! This session would also be great for TAs.

Bar Modelling

This popular session will introduce the bar model and Viv will also share an alternative to RUCSAC which puts representation and understanding at the heart of solving word problems.

Building Learning Power (BLP) in the Mathematics Classroom

This practical day-long session looks at how your staff could embrace BLP or learning to learn in maths lessons. This session has been successfully delivered a number of times and can be adapted to reflect how much work your school has done using BLP or other approaches to learning to learn. It would be beneficial if TAs also attended this session.

Developing Mathematical Role Play

Vivien has worked with primary colleagues from EYFS to Y6 on considering what role play might look like in mathematics. According to your needs, the session could focus on getting more maths into your role play or on getting more role play into your maths!

Making Maths Meaningful

Real life maths can be challenging to facilitate in the classroom. Vivien can share ideas for using newsworthy statistics to bring both the maths and the news to life. She could also look at real life challenges which are a fantastic opportunity for pupils to demonstrate their mathematics. This session could fit well with work on APP, Ma1 and cross-curricular planning.

Making the Most of the Starts and Ends of Maths Lessons

As well as trying out lots of engaging activities, Vivien can lead discussions with colleagues about what makes a successful start or end to a lesson.

Planning a Maths Event

Vivien can work with your subject leader or whole staff team to plan and deliver a maths event in your school or cluster. She can share lots of successful models and ideas as a starting point for discussions.

This popular commission can support colleagues in making meaningful links between maths and other subjects and topics. Vivien can model strategies and support colleagues with their future planning.

Promoting Mathematical Vocabulary

Using and Applying Mathematics

This popular commission can help teachers to get to grips with the demands of the Using and Applying element of mathematics. We can experience activities and assess ourselves in order to understand the various aspects of Ma1 and we can unpick what opportunities we need to present to our children, as well as what we need to teach and model in order for them to excel as mathematicians.
